Action Based Care was formed in 2003 and operates as a non profit organization exclusively for charitable purposes. Our primary
activity is the introduction underprivileged, disabled, and depressed persons to the sport of sailing. Over the past few summers,
we have conducted instructional and pleasure sails for clients of Rumford Group Homes, Inc., which are located throughout
central Maine. These trips introduced homeless mothers, at-risk and troubled children and teens, and economically challenged
individuals to the joys and challenges of sailing.
Groups usually consisted of three clients,
one counselor, and a USCG licensed skipper. Trips were eight hours in length and entailed sailing the waters of Casco Bay,
Maine and exploring the many islands in close proximity to Falmouth. Groups were encouraged to appreciate the breathtaking
scenery coastal Maine has to offer, which few get to see from an on-the-water perspective.
""ROCKSTAR", a J-24 one design, was the primary vessel used for these excursions. A nine foot inflatable
dinghy and a thirteen foot whitehall rowboat were used to transport clients to and from the J-24. This introduced them to
these other comon forms of vessels and propulsion, as well as specific handling and safety techniques required for their operation.
Action Based Care aquired a J-41 racing boat that was commissioned and launched in the
spring of 2007. This vessel enabled us to expand our program last summer, providing additional capacity and a broader learning
platform for instruction in sailing, seamanship, and introductory racing programs.
The
new boat was rechristened as "NORTHSTAR" and was very active during the 2007/2008 season with Rumford Group
Homes and seniors from Granite Hills Estates. In addition to taking clients of ABC on sailing adventures, "NORTHSTAR"
is available for day and evening charter sails, team building activities, and private crewed charters. Sailing lessons
are also available, as are crew positions for a limited number of racing events. All revenues from these activities will be
directed back into the program to expand and improve our services.
A.B.C. has relocated to Annapolis, Maryland for the 2009 season and beyond. We are very excited to be in "America's
Sailing Capital". We look forward to expanding our program and working with the many existing similar organizations
that are devoted to increasing access to sailing to those less fortunate.
If you or someone you know could benefit from our program,
please feel free to contact us for more information. Also, we are always looking for positive, enthusiastic people and crew
members for deliveries, maintenance, and fund raising activities.
